Overview

Coated paper is the workhorse facestock for thermal transfer labels. A coated surface takes the ribbon evenly, so density is solid and barcode edges stay crisp. In Chinese trade usage this stock is often called "Avery coated", referring to facestock from first-tier mills such as Avery Dennison. There is no thermal layer here, so a ribbon is always required.

Fifteen standard sizes

From 30x20mm to 100x150mm: 1800 labels per roll at 30x20mm, 800 at 40x30mm, 50x30mm and 60x40mm, 1000 at 70x50mm and 80x50mm, 600 at 100x70mm and 100x80mm, 500 at 100x100mm, 400 at 100x120mm, 325 at 100x150mm. 40mm core, 2mm gap, R2mm corner radius.

Why the extra ribbon is worth it

Direct thermal is cheaper and needs no ribbon, but the print fears heat and solvents and has a limited shelf life. Coated paper with a ribbon costs one more step and returns stable density and a longer readable window: with a mixed-base ribbon in a dry room-temperature store, barcodes stay readable through the shelf period, and carton labels survive shipping abrasion.

Choosing a ribbon

Wax is the cheapest and suits short-life paper labels. Mixed-base resists scratching and some solvents, making it the normal partner for coated paper. Resin is meant for film facestocks such as PET and PVC and is rarely worth it on paper.

FAQ

Do I need a ribbon?|Yes. Coated paper has no thermal layer, so nothing prints without a thermal transfer ribbon. Wax is general purpose, mixed-base resists scratching. How long does the print last?|With a mixed-base ribbon in a dry room-temperature store, barcodes stay readable through the shelf period, clearly longer than plain thermal paper. What does it cost over thermal?|One extra ribbon, in exchange for stable density, heat and solvent resistance and a longer archive life. Better value for long-lived labels. What is Avery facestock?|Trade shorthand for coated facestock from Avery Dennison, known for flat sheets and even coating that feed smoothly.
